How Long Does It Take To Recharge Car Air Conditioning?

If your car’s air conditioning has stopped blowing cold or it’s just not as icy as it once was, a recharge (also called a regas) is usually the first thing to look at. It’s one of the most common AC fixes, and one of the quickest jobs to get done on your car as well.

For standard aircon recharges at Vital Vehicle Care, you won’t need to leave your car with us. Grab a seat in our waiting room and you’ll be back in a cold car before you know it. If you’ve been driving around wondering whether a regas will actually fix your problem, or how long it could take to sort out, it’s worth reading this before you book.

Step-by-Step Air Conditioning Recharge Process

A regas isn’t just a case of topping up the refrigerant like you would a bottle of water, there’s a proper process that includes performance tests and checking for leaks.

Performance Test

Before we do anything, we run a full performance check on your AC system. We’re looking at how cold it’s actually blowing, whether the compressor is engaging when you switch it on, and whether airflow through the vents is where it should be.

Refrigerant Recovery

Whatever refrigerant is left in the system gets safely recovered using specialist equipment. Venting refrigerant into the atmosphere is illegal so reputable garages will always recover it properly before proceeding.

Vacuum Test

Once the system is empty, we pull it into a vacuum to draw out any moisture that has crept into the system over time (moisture can freeze inside the AC and cause blockages). It also tells us whether the system is holding pressure because, if it isn’t, then there’s a leak we’ll need to deal with before we go any further.

Recharge With the Correct Refrigerant

Older vehicles typically use R134a while newer models run on R1234yf, and using the wrong type can cause real damage to the system. We work with both and always recharge your car with the correct spec for its make and model.

Final Performance Test

Once the recharge is complete, we test the system again to confirm it’s actually cooling properly before you leave.

Factors Affecting How Long an Air Conditioning Recharge Takes

The 45 to 60 minute window covers the vast majority of straightforward recharges, but a couple of things can affect how long the job actually takes on the day.

Make and Model

Different vehicles have different AC system layouts and refrigerant capacities, so some models are much more straightforward to work on than others. A larger system will take longer to fully evacuate and refill, and on certain makes the components are a bit more buried and take extra time to access properly.

The time estimate is based on a typical job, so it’s always worth treating it as a guide rather than a fixed figure.

Diagnostic Time

This is the factor that can make the biggest difference to how long a recharge takes. If your AC has been underperforming for a while, there’s a good chance it isn’t just low on gas but low because it’s been leaking.

Refrigerant doesn’t disappear from a sealed system on its own, so if yours has lost its charge, something has let it out. That’s likely a dried-out O-ring, a worn seal or a hairline crack in a hose or condenser.

When our vacuum test flags a leak, we use UV dye and pressure testing to locate it, and we’ll always come and talk to you about what we’ve found before doing anything else. Regassing a leaking system without fixing the source first is a short-term fix at best, and we’d rather be straight with you about it upfront than have you back in the same situation a few weeks later.

If it turns out your car needs more than just a regas, whether that’s a leak repair, a compressor that’s on its way out, or a system that’s started smelling like a damp dog when you switch it on, take a look at our car air conditioning repair page to see everything we can help with.

Do You Have to Leave Your Car With Us?

For a standard recharge, no, most customers wait in our waiting room while we carry out the work. If we find something during the diagnostic stage that needs more attention, we’ll let you know before we proceed.

We also have courtesy cars and a collection service available if the job does turn out to be a longer one.
